Hi, my name is Yvette Marner . I’m a mum, cake decorator, teacher and general worker bee at Fun n Funky Cakes based in Essex.
I began my cake decorating journey 17 years ago when I decided to make my daughters birthday cake .
I bought a Debbie Brown book and decided that it would be easy! It wasn’t, it was a disaster. My daughter thought I was the best mum in the world and it was that feeling that made me carry on.
Lucky for me, none these cakes are floating about the internet , they are safely hidden in photo albums, locked away never to be seen!
I decided I needed to learn more and I found a local cake decorating course and I’ve not looked back. I was taught by an amazing lady called Pat Saunders and made some great friends. I got the bug for courses and wanted to keep learning .
I was honoured to be asked to step into my tutor’s shoes when she retired and I now teach the college course I started on. I’ve just finished my second year and I love it.
The highlight was winning the Best College Display Table and Alexandra Palace in 2016 and meeting such lovely people.
I also teach from home and have travelled to Malta to teach airbrushing (its a tough job!!).
I run weekly evening courses and day courses. I teach sculpted cakes , airbrushing and also sweet trees (did you spot the sweet tree at the Weddible dress exhibit at Alexandra Palace ?).
I started entering competitons in 2013 and was gobsmacked to get a Gold and a Bronze Award.
The Gold was for my crocodile cake and the Bronze was for my Beauty and the Beast wedding cake (the first time I made the rose).
I got the bug!
I entered as often as I could and I have 6 Gold Awards, 2 Silvers and 4 Bronzes plus a Third Place.
It has become a family thing with my daughter entering also , she has achieved Golds, Silver, Bronze and First , Second and Third place awards.
I always say she must have a great teacher!
I was asked to do a live demonstration carving cakes at the Cake and Bake show in 2013, that was the most terrifying and exhilarating experience ever! I retired from entering Cake International , when I was asked to be a Candidate Judge.

I was so honoured and possibly a little too excited! It was an amazing experience and very humbling.
The highlight of my career was being asked to co create the “Weddible Dress”.
At the time we didn’t realise how popular it would be . It was the the biggest project I’ve been involved in and was a huge success.
Im so proud of what we all achieved as a team , if not a little relieved when “Big Betty” (my pet name for her ) left my kitchen!!
My aims for the future , I’d love to open a cake school and I’d like to carry on with the exhibits and judging.
