Its time to make a change in the cake world

In the cake decorating world, I see masses of creativity and light and for many people cake decorating is their happy place, their creative outlet, where they go to escape the often brutal reality of life. They may not be the best cake decorators, they may not sell cakes, they may just do it as a creative outlet and for the love of it.

For some it allows them to gain confidence after they have lost it. Perhaps, they have been out of the workforce and have not had the confidence to go out job seeking. The pure pleasure of creating something magical in your kitchen and watching your skills improve can increase your confidence and allow you to walk more freely in the world. Starting a small business from home may be just enough or it may pave the way to a bigger dream.

For a long time I have believed that doing more of what you love just might be the answer to many a conundrum.

In the past few weeks, I have been observing how things affect me. The good, the bad, the negative and the irritating. And in particular, how things on Facebook affect me. Why do I feel irritated when I see certain posts on Facebook. Why do I allow them to affect me? Why do I even read them for that matter? And I am struck by the amount of posts in cake decorating forums that are negative.

There’s a part in all of us that falls into negativity and some days when I look at Facebook and the cake decorating groups, I just have to walk away. Disappointed.

There are many things in this world that make the world a better and more positive place. Support, encouragement, warmth, happiness, delight and joy. Social media has given us an incredible opportunity to connect with like minded people and experience and give all of these things. Other people around the world, who we would never have had the chance to connect with, whom like us are creative or are desiring to awaken the creative spark that they know lies within them.

There is this opportunity to connect, share joy and support those who have much in common with you and also those who have the same doubts, fears and desires as you. Yet often, amongst this amazing opportunity that we have with ability to connect with people all around the world, we choose to engage in bickering, arguing over petty issues, feeling jealous or worse still feeling bad about ourselves because it seems that another caker has more likes or makes better cakes.

I am going to set you a challenge. The next time you receive an email from a bride asking for a cake to feed 400 for $100. Say to yourself, “How funny…I probably would have done the same thing before I knew just how much work went into cakes” And then instead of posting a rant of how annoying and uneducated your clients are, post a question to see what cakes people are making that week, or ask if anyone has learned any new techniques lately.

The next time you see an argument on Facebook about copyright or stolen pictures, keep scrolling and then leave a nice comment on someones beautiful cake, or say congratulations to someone who has just taught their first class rather than entering into a pointless argument that will only consume your precious time and make you feel angry, upset and less creative.

Cake is about celebration, sharing joy, sharing food made with love. Its about shared moments in life, smiles and beauty. This week, I am going to ask you to share a little of those things with your fellow cake decorators. We have an opportunity to connect, share and create beautiful communities and of course beautiful cake. Lets make the most of it.

Louise xx
